Jalukie, June 16 (MExN): A one-day scientific workshop on "Conservation of Indigenous Cow Breeds" was organised at the College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry (CVScAH), Jalukie on June 16 with focus on promoting awareness and strengthen efforts towards conserving native cattle genetic resources.
The programme was chaired by Dr I Shakuntala, Dean of the college, who highlighted the importance of preserving indigenous cattle breeds for sustainable livestock development, climate resilience and rural livelihoods.
Speaking at the workshop, Dr Kathiraven P, Principal Scientist at ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun, emphasised the need for scientific breeding strategies, conservation measures and policy interventions to protect and improve indigenous cattle populations. He underscored the role of native breeds in maintaining biodiversity and ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability.
Dr Kedozul Ltu, Project Coordinator, Nagaland Livestock Development Board, shared experiences and field-level initiatives undertaken in Nagaland for the conservation, development and promotion of indigenous livestock resources through community participation and institutional support.
The scientific sessions were followed by an interactive panel discussion involving experts, academicians, researchers and livestock stakeholders.
The workshop concluded with a collective commitment to strengthen efforts towards the conservation and promotion of indigenous cattle breeds, according to a press release from the college.
