Cyclone ‘Sitrang': NSDMA issues advisory 

Kohima, October 23 (MExN): The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department today informed that the State will be experiencing heavy to extremely heavy rainfalls at most places on account of Cyclone ‘Sitrang’ from October 24-26.  Thundershowers will be a common feature for next few days, it said. 

Districts such as Peren, Phek, Wohka, Kiphire and Tuensang are likely to experience very heavy rainfall at isolated places and it is important to take necessary precautionary measures during this time, the Authority said.  

It must be noted here that the IMD’s Regional Met Centre (RMC) on October 22 has issued ‘Orange’ alert for Peren, Phek, Kiphire and Tuensang districts during the October 24-26 period. Exercise caution from gale winds which may cause disruption in communication and connectivity, it further advised. During the period, the minimum and maximum temperature of the State will also vary between 9°C and 30°C respectively, it informed. 

The public is urged to exercise caution to avoid any eventualities during this period, added the release from Johnny Ruangmei, Joint Chief Executive Officer NSDMA.

It further also requested all the District Disaster Management Authorities and other line departments responsible to attend to any emergencies caused by natural calamities and to be on alert to save lives and properties during the period.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Deep Depression over westcentral & adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal moved northwestwards with a speed of 18 kmph and lay centered at 11:30 AM on Sunday.

It is very likely to move northwestwards during and intensify into a cyclonic storm over central Bay of Bengal and subsequently recurve and move north-northeastwards and make landfall  between Tinkona Island and Sandwip close to Barisal in Bangladesh around October 25 early morning. 

Under its influence fairly widespread/ widespread rainfall accompanied with Thunderstorm/Lightning/Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places over the north-eastern states during October 24-24, the NSDMA release added.
