
Phek, April 22 (DIPR): Deputy Commissioner Phek, Muruho Chotso has donated two cubs of Asian Black Bear to the Department of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Phek Forest Division. He officially handed over the two cubs to DFO Phek, Rongsenlemla Imchen IFS at Phek. The cubs, a male and a female are healthy and in good condition. The Asian black bear (Ursus thibetanus) is also known as moon bear and white-chested bear. It is classified as vulnerable by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources).
DFO Phek thanked the Deputy Commissioner and acknowledged the District Administration for contributing and collaborating with the department in protecting wild life. She cautioned the public that hunting, snaring, trapping, selling and buying of wild animals and its produces will amount to criminal offence under the Wild Life Protection Act 1972 with a penalty of Rs 25,000 and an imprisonment of 3-7 years or both.
DFO has also reminded the notification issued by DC Phek, which has directed all the Village Councils to stringently implement the Village Forest Resolution passed by the respective council. She cautioned the village councils that non adherence of the same will result in curtailment of all projects under the department and also withheld the fund flow to the concern VDB.
