Lauds DMC for addressing unauthorized market checks and penalties
DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 4 (MExN): The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has appreciated the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) for issuing a stern warning against unauthorized individuals and organizations conducting checks in markets under the DMC’s jurisdiction.
In a press release issued on Monday, the DCCI reiterated that no individual or organization is allowed to conduct unauthorized checks or impose penalties on business establishments. Any grievances related to business houses or shops should be directed to the competent authority or the DCCI for resolution. The DCCI also cautioned organizations against issuing summons to shopkeepers or business owners on baseless grounds, and urged the relevant authorities to take strict action to address such issues.
The chamber noted that it has recently received several complaints from the business community regarding unauthorized individuals conducting checks and collecting money under the guise of the DMC, without valid identification. These individuals have reportedly failed to issue receipts for the money collected.
The DCCI highlighted that only certified and genuine DMC employees should be authorized to collect any legal fees or taxes. Furthermore, such collections should be reflected in the DMC exchequer so that the funds can be used for public amenities and market improvements.
Regarding price fixation, the DCCI expressed concern over the sudden and unreasonable increase in the prices of goods and essential commodities. The Chamber urged that it be consulted during price fixation processes to help prevent unnecessary price fluctuations and eliminate the influence of syndicates.
Additionally, the DCCI raised an important issue of common concern. It appealed to the relevant departments and the DMC to ensure that all roads and drainage systems in commercial areas- especially markets and business centers- are repaired and cleared before the onset of the monsoon.
The DCCI warned that failure to address these issues promptly would lead to the same hardships caused by flooded roads and clogged drains during the rainy season. Given that Dimapur is the highest revenue-generating district, the DCCI urged the government to prioritize the city’s deteriorating infrastructure, including roads, drains, and other essential services.
The DCCI, meanwhile, extended its appreciation to the government and its agencies for the successful completion of the Road Over Bridge (ROB) near DDSC Stadium. The closure of the ROB during the 2024 festive season caused significant hardship to the public and the business community, but this issue has now been resolved, it stated.
