CNCCI mulling Nagaland state-wide agitation

Dimapur, September 22 (MExN): The demands to put a stop on ‘multiple taxations’ in Nagaland were further amplified  on Wednesday with all 12 District Chambers of Commerce and Industry submitting representations to the state Chief Secretary.

The district trade bodies which are all affiliated to the Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) submitted the representations to the respective district Deputy Commissioners, reminding the Government of Nagaland to redress the issues put up by the CNCCI in its September 9 memo, according to a statement from CNCCI Chairperson Dr Khekugha Muru. The letters were printed on the respective District Chamber of Commerce & Industry letterhead and appended by the President and General Secretary, he added.

In the representations, the district units emphasized that the issue of multiple taxation was not just restricted to Dimapur district alone but also the whole of Nagaland. As such, it demanded that the government address the issue across the state.

It also reiterated the CNCCI’s demand for inclusion of “Reserved Nominee Representation in ULB of Business/Trade Bodies” under the Nagaland Municipal Act and the implementation of the Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest Act, 2002.

“The government has made known to us that it will take up SARFAESI Act in the upcoming assembly for which we are grateful. However, we reiterate our demand to call for Special Assembly to enact SARFAESI Act since the implementation of this Act is long overdue by nearly 2 (two) decades in Nagaland,” the representation stated.

Further, Dr Muru underscored that the confederation had undertaken its first phase of actions by imposing a 12-hour state-wide closure of businesses on September 16, followed by the second phase—submission of letter to Chief Secretary through respective District DC office on Wednesday.

The third phase, if the government does not address the issues at the earliest, would be a state-wide agitation, the chairperson added. He however, did not specify a time-frame for the proposed agitation.
