Deputy CM urges police to serve with renewed vigour

Inaugurates new office buildings of Commandant 3rd NAP Tuensang & SP Zunheboto

The virtual inauguration of the new office buildings of Commandant, 3rd NAP Battalion Tuensang and Superintendent of Police Zunheboto was done today by Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton at PHQ Kohima.

Patton said that weather problem had compelled the department to go for virtual inauguration and assured that he would visit the office buildings physically before Christmas.

He said that with the inauguration of the new office buildings, the personnel would continue to provide public service to the people with renewed vigour. He appealed to all civil society organizations to continue extending co-operation in maintaining peace and harmony in the districts.

Patton informed that successive Governments of Nagaland under the leadership of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio have been witnessing infrastructural development to bring quality service to the people. He further asked the public of Tuensang and Zunheboto to cooperate with the law enforcing agencies to ensure better security environment to usher in development.

Getting a new building itself is not enough but the amount of quality services that stakeholders discharge matters the most, he said urging the staff to re-dedicate in dispensing their responsibilities in service of the people.

Patton also congratulated the DGP Nagaland and the Police Department, particularly the Commandant, 3rd NAP Battalion Tuensang and the Superintendent of Police, Zunheboto for ensuring timely completion of the new office buildings.
 
‘Nagaland Police needs heavy dose of infrastructure development’
Rupin Sharma, Director General of Police (DGP), Nagaland informed that the infrastructure of Nagaland Police is not in very good shape with old and dilapidated buildings and lack of proper fencing. We need heavy dose of infrastructure development in Nagaland police, he said.

Stating that the department is trying its best to meet the required infrastructure development, he looked forward to help from the Ministry of Home Affairs as well as additional fund from the State Government. “We will gradually try to improve this (Infrastructure),” he said.

Housing & Mechanical Engineering Minister, P Bashangmongba Chang said that it was through the initiative and dedication of the Deputy CM that the aspiration of Tuensang people in general and 3rd NAP Battalion in particular have become real. 

The 3rd NAP Battalion has a record of being one of the best police battalions in Nagaland, he said, adding “their rapid action, effective, implementation and other bonafide duties and service rendered in maintaining law & order is appreciated and highly commendable and is widely acclaimed not only in the state but also in other states, cities and Union Territories of India.”

With the coming of the new office building, I am confident that all ranks and files of this battalion will work sincerely in upliftment and maintenance of law and order without any bias and prejudice, the Minister added.

Food & Civil Supplies and Legal Metrology Advisor, KT Sukhalu also spoke at the programme. Sethrongkyu Sangtam, Advisor, IT&C, Economics & Statistics and Evaluation, Nagaland also attended the function.   

In the technical report, Er Finson, SE, Police Engineering Project informed that construction of the new office building of Commandant 3rd NAP battalion Tuensang involved Rs. 2,22,98,988. The contractor was T& P Enterprises.

Construction of SP office building for DEF Zunheboto involved a total amount of Rs. 1,84, 44,104. It included side development, internal & external water supply and sanitation and rain water harvesting facility. The contractor was M/S H Kughaho Zhimomi.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by Renchamo P Kikon, Additional DGP (Administration).
 
About 3rd NAP Battalion
The Deputy CM said that the 3rd NAP Battalion, raised on May 1, 1967 has the distinction of successfully being deployed during the onter-state conflict between Assam and Nagaland, popularly known as the Merapani Operation in 1985. Following the 1985 conflict, the 3rd NAP Battalion earned itself the moniker “Tiger Battalion.”

The 3rd NAP Battalion also known as the Ferocious 3rd has been the vanguard in providing security to the state from external aggression, he said, adding that the battalion stands second to none.

The initial raising of the 3rd NAP Battalion like many other units of Nagaland Police was initially located in Chümoukedima and was subsequently shifted to its present location in Tuensang. It has now completed 55 years of public service.

Patton further said that Zunheboto was earlier under Mokokchung district and it became a full-fledged district in 1973 after bifurcation from Mokokchung district on December 12, 1973.  Zunheboto district was upgraded from 2 sub-divisions to 4 sub-divisions in December 2022 under the DAN government.

Through proactive measures Zunheboto Police along with cooperation from the public broke the nefarious trend of violence, loss of human life and property to zero in the recently held Nagaland Legislative assembly elections 2023, he added.
