Development of herbal gardens in Nagaland

Seven herbal gardens has been established in Nagaland this year spreading 5 ha each.

The seven herbal gardens include Rangapahar Herbal Garden, Dimapur, Jalukie Herbal Garden, Khezhakeno Herbal Garden, Doyang Herbal Garden, Wokha, Mon Herbal Garden, Mokokchung Herbal Garden and Kohima Herbal Garden.

The objectives of developing herbal gardens is to conserve medical plants of Nagaland, developing a gene pool medicinal plants for conservation and propagation, popularizing use of local medicinal and aromatic plants, establishment of sustainable medicinal plants resource base, developing a centre for tourist attraction point, training of local people to popularize farming of economically viable medicinal species.

It also aims to ensure quality seed and seedling production for distribution to farmers, trial of new medicinal species for introduction in agro-forestry models, development of protocol for cultivation techniques for important medicinal plants as cash crops, standardization of storage conditions and to facilitate student community in their research work and other related studies.

Strategy for sustainable management of herbal gardens created includes management of malis, at least 2 nos in each herbal garden, creation of herbal nursery, construction of vermicompost unit, interpretation centre, setting up of primary processing unit like portable distillery unit for value addition, roping of other sources of fund in managing the herbal garden, production of planting materials of endemic species of the state, publicity and advertisement of the products, formation of herbal society, realization of nominal entry fee from the visitors.

Meanwhile, some common medicals plants found in Nagaland include Paris polyphylla, Valeriana wallichii, Hypericum perforatum, Taxus baccata, Cephalotaxus griffithii, Aconitum napellus, Curcuma caesia, Alpinia galangal, Homalomena aromatica, Cephalotaxus griffithii, Emlica officinalis, Cinnamomum tamala, Terminalia chebula, Oroxylum indicum, Terminalia Arjuna, Cinnammum zeylanicum, Kaempferia galangal, Abelmoschus moschatus, Adhatoda vasica, Rauvolfia spepentina, Rauvolfia tetraphylla, Asparagus racemosus, Bixa orellana, Bacopa monnieri, Artemisia pallns, Artemisia annua, Saraca asoca, Mentha piperita, Mentha arvenis, Mentha spicata, Ocimum sanctum, Ocimum canum, Ocimum basillicum, Sauropus androgynus, Cissus quadrangularis, Clausena heptaphylla, Phlogacanthus thyrsiflorus, Mcuna pruriens, Coleus gromaticus, Maranta arundinacea, Andrographis paniculata, Aquilaria agallocha, Costus spaciosus, Arocus calamus and Santalum album.
