DIMAPUR, JUNE 17 (MExN): The Dhansiri River Flood Control Board (DRFCB) has pointed out that the ongoing incessant rainfall has caught the citizens of Dimapur district unexpected and with little warning “troubling the usual and calm patterns of the living and also throwing things out of control”.
The Board in a press note issued by Hokheto Kiba, Chairman and Mukibur Rahman, Secretary informed that the fresh spate of this season’s rainfall has left most of the roads and low-lying areas in temporary flood-like condition. “With very poor drainage system and non-existent planning the yearly water logging problem affects everyone in one way or the other. Even schools and houses are not spared”, stated the press note.
The DRFCB stated that “with the onset of the monsoons, motorists and pedestrians alike should take precautionary measures to prevent being drowned in one of the many backwaters of Dimapur city”. “Rains may bring a sigh of relief to the average Dimapurians from the oppressive heat but it invariably also brings its share of sorrows”, it stated while adding that with flooded streets after every downpour, it was a nightmare for motorists in Dimapur. “With massive potholes and the rugged terrain that our roads offer, there is no telling where the next big bump will come from. And for pedestrians, it is more of a do-or-die situation”, states the Board.
With flood water engulfing areas like Burma Camp, Dhobinallah, Sewak, Nagarjan, Super Market, the Board felt that this was a “very poor sign of neglected water logging problem caused due to the absence of proper drainage system”. “Stagnant water is not a separate problem but it can lead to numerous problems like causing trouble to pedestrians, commuters and residents, and risk of outbreak of epidemics. Stagnant water is also a breeding ground for germs and insects, which can cause human hazard”, it highlighted.
The DRFCB explained that at Dhobinallah, an electrical transformer has been flooded with the waters threatening the lives of people living nearby and also outsiders. “Therefore, the government and its agencies should have some concrete policies on how to address this reality. While the government stares into the larger facet of this problem, people also should come forward by not blocking the proper flow of the sewage and by not throwing wastes”, it suggested.
The Board has further appealed to people, especially students to avoid swimming in Dhansiri River as the river’s current is very high and dangerous at this season. Meanwhile, if anyone drowns at Dhansiri River, people should immediately contact the Dhansiri River Flood Control Board office at Purana Bazaar’s marketing complex or contact 9862634528/9436207393, it was informed.
