Women for Women in collaboration with Ethnic Group of Nagaland (EGON) celebrated International Women’s day at Hotel Europa Inn, Dimapur on March 8 which saw a host of women participants from all walks of life.
At the outset, EGON President, D Ledia Awomi in her welcome address spoke of the importance of recognising the achievements and contributions, women have made in society.
Meanwhile, Founder of ‘Beyond Cancer’, Ahimsa Awomi shared on the challenges of being a woman in today’s age stating that each one should be supportive and encouraging of each other. Being a cancer survivor, she shared a personal poem written by her titled, “I am my sister’s protector.” Through it she questioned the women around her of when, “We talk about supporting and giving space to one another, but are we really doing it?”
“How difficult it is for women to appreciate one another? How difficult it is for women to give space to one another?” she went on further.
For her, it is imperative that women stand together, come what may, instead of comparing and competing against each other. “I will share in her victory, I will be happy for her and I will appreciate her good deeds,” she quoted from her poem.
Moreover, she said that although so much has been done for the progress of women, it has been years and ages. Yet, “Still we are discriminated and not included in decision making.”
In order to progress and be in a place of decision making and make our voices heard, we need to work on ourselves, she viewed. Instead of competing with other people why not compete with yourself. Though education has provided several benefits to women, they are still lacking behind in a lot of aspects. As such introspection is much needed.
Further she emphasized on the need for parents to foster daughters not to only emphasize on beauty but to inculcate values beyond just aiming to “impress someone else.”
During the programme, a special walk was presented by Miss Dimapur 2023, Ilihika Aye and Miss Earth Nagaland 2023, Linokali Achumi.
