Dimapur police arrest four for smuggling pigs from Assam 

Dimapur, July 18 (MExN): The Dimapur Police has arrested four people in connection with the smuggling of pigs into Dimapur from Assam on July 17. 

Four people, identified as Bipul Mech (22 yrs), Arun Boro (23 yrs) Lipoksunep Ozukum (25 yrs) and Sashi Ozukum (33 yrs), were arrested "on criminal charges of smuggling pigs from Balijan, Assam,"  the Dimapur Police informed in a press release on July 18.

A total of 12 pigs were seized along with a Tata Pick-up truck, out of which 9 pigs were found dead, it said. The seized livestock were handed over to the District Veterinary Department for further expert examination.

In this connection, a case has been registered in Diphupar Police Station under relevant section of IPC, The Epidemic Act, 1897 and Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, the release added. 

The police further remined the public that the State Government has banned the import of pig from neighbouring states in view of the outbreak of African Swine Fever. 

“Therefore, any violation of this order will amount to criminal offence for which necessary legal action will be pursued against the defaulter,” it added.
