Dimapur Police arrests kidnappers, seizes arms

Dimapur, February 8 (MExN): The Dimapur Police on February 5 conducted a joint operation with the 5th Assam Rifles to rescue a person who was reportedly kidnapped for ransom.

According to a press note from the DCP (Crime) & PRO Dimapur Police, the victim, identified as Mon Bahadur Chetri alias Temjen Jamir, was abducted from his home by four unknown persons on February 5 morning, and a ransom of Rs 1 lakh was demanded for his release. 

On receipt of the information, a joint operation by Dimapur Police along with the 5th AR was conducted at Padam Pukhuri, Dimapur. “On reaching the suspected house, a cordon and search was conducted at the residence of Benito Chophy, Deputy Kilonser of NSCN Akato Chophy group.  The kidnapped victim was rescued and 9 military wings cadres of NSCN/GPRN Akato Chophy (Non-Cease Fire) and two civilians were arrested,” the PRO informed.

A case has been registered at the East Police Station and is under investigation, it said. 

According to the release, one .22 pistol with magazine, one .32 pistol with magazine, one letter head of NSCN Akato Chophy group (promotion order), Military dress (one trouser and one cap), one register containing extortion details from transporters, eight smart phones and three basic phones, 1 cancelled red cards, and 3 cancelled blue cards were recovered from the arrested persons. 

The apprehended individuals who were reportedly cadres of the NSCN/GPRN (Akato) were identified as Isato Aye (36) Lt Colonel; Niputo Zhimomi (28) Lieutenant; Kakugha Zhimomi (30) Lieutenant; Kughalu Chishi (42) Major; Vikishe Ayemi (58) Kilonser; Hukato Chophy (49) Brigadier; Avika Chophy (37) Jt Secy; Tokato Awomi (32) Major; and David Yepthomi (40) Sergeant. The two civilians were identified as Lokho Leriena Mao (34) and Awoto Awomi (18).
