
One held for kidnapping minor
DIMAPUR, June 3 (MExN): One person was arrested in connection with an alleged kidnapping which occurred on May 31 in Dimapur. The accused identified as Altaf Ali alias Hussain (24 years) was arrested from Chaparmukh railway station, Assam on June 2 by GRPS personnel. A five-old girl, who was allegedly kidnapped by the accused was rescued and reunited with her family.
According to a press release from the Additional Superintendent of Police, Dimapur, the accused had abducted the girl (name withheld) from Half-Nagarjan, Dimapur on May 31. The girl was the niece of Ali’s wife, the release stated. The motive behind the alleged kidnapping was yet to be ascertained and investigation is on.
Two held for tax collection
In two separate incidents on Monday, two persons were arrested by the police for illegally collecting money in the name of ‘tax’ in Dimapur. One of the accused, who was arrested today, was said to be involved in ‘betel leaves dealership syndicate’. The accused was identified as Abdul Hasim (34 years), hailing from Karimkanj district, Assam and presently residing at Borlengri, Karbi Anglong.
According to a press release from the Additional Superintendent of Police, Dimapur, Hasim works under the patronage of some underground functionaries as a ‘tax collector’. “On interrogation of the accused, it was ascertained that he collects illegal taxes from all the Gumti (Pan) shops dealing in betel leaves and betel nuts.
The proceeds of the illegal tax collected are handed over to the syndicate. It was revealed that the syndicate is run under the patronage of some senior underground functionaries which is investigated,” stated the release. Incriminating documents containing the list of shops and tax collection records were seized from his possession, it was added. Further investigation is reported to be underway.
In the other incident, Aloto Kiba (27 years) of Lotovi village, Kuhuboto was caught red-handed from Church Road (Nyamo Lotha Road) while collecting money in the name of the FGN (Non-Accordist). The press release from the ASP stated that businesses were threatened of dire consequences if the demands were not fulfilled. Cash amounting to Rs 18,000 was also recovered from his possession. The accused told police that he was directed by one Victo, a ‘Sgt.Maj.’ in the FGN (Non-Accordist), who resides at Ekranipathar, Dimapur; to collect ‘tax’ in the name of the organisation, stated the release. “The other accused is evading arrest and police are making efforts to bring the accused to book,” the release added.
