Dimapur to “down shutter” for bandh on June 18: ACAUT

Bans sale of syndicate controlled poultry

Dimapur, June 15 (MExN): The Action Committee Against Unabated Taxation (ACAUT), under the aegis of the Naga Council Dimapur, has called for a “symbolic bandh” in Dimapur on June 18, Tuesday (6:00 am to 6:00 pm) as a first stage of agitation against heavy taxation that continues to burden people of Nagaland. This has been stated by the ACAUT’s Co-Convenor, L. Supong Ao, and Secretary, Solomon L. Awomi, in a press release.

In lieu of the bandh, all business establishments, including medicine shops/chemists/druggist have been requested to “down shutters”. Schools and other educational institutions have been requested to declare holiday to “share solidarity against taxation menace”. However, there shall be no ban on vehicular movement. All chambers of commerce in other districts have also been requested to express solidarity on this day.

“Despite the efforts of Action Committee to streamline taxation over the past few weeks, the menace of unabated taxation and illegal collection has not abated or checked except for a few arrests for which police is lauded,” notified the press release. “The government of the day has not directly addressed this issue except for vague references to rehabilitation or sustenance package for UGs. Fight against unabated taxation and illegal collections calls for a concerted effort from all stakeholders, more so for the government but the latter has been found wanting in this regard,” it noted.

Highlighting also that syndicates continue to operate and that both the DMC and the district administration are to blame for price hikes, the ACAUT has also notified of an indefinite ban throughout the State (starting June 18) on the sale of syndicate controlled poultry products including local chicken. Stating that poultry syndicate run by migrants has destroyed the livelihood of Naga farmers, the ACAUT informed, “Anyone found selling poultry shall be doing so at their own risk. Naga public is requested to co-operate…This ban shall stay in force till the price comes down to an acceptable level on par with neighbouring Assam.”
