The idea that disability is not a weakness was amply demonstrated through an exercise with pen and a paper during Young Athletes Seminar at Christian Higher Secondary School, Dimapur on September 23.
Area Director, Special Olympics Nagaland (SON), R. C. Arenla Tzudir asked the participants of the Seminar to draw a rectangle with four partitions on a plain sheet of paper. She then asked them to write their name in the first box and told them to repeat the exercise in the second box using their other side of the hand. In the third box, the participants were made to scribble their names using the pen in their mouth while in the fourth box, they were asked to write their names using the pen between their toes.
After this, she brought home the point that no matter how difficult it was for the participants to write their names using different parts of their body, they could still write their names in different styles and methods. “So this shows that nothing is impossible if you have the will and disability is not a weakness if one has the will,” she added.
Arenla also presented a PowerPoint presentation highlighting the activities of SON since its inception in 2009 working for the uplift of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). SON, a voluntary NGO has covered all the 11 districts in the State with games and sports competitions for PwDs and has participated in several sports programs all over the country. SON has also participated in two international competitions, seven national championships and five national games.
Besides attending sports events, the Organization also conducts several social care events like Special Christmas, health check-ups, issuance of medical certificate, rail concession certificate, social welfare ID card, exposure trips, talent shows, etc.
The programme, organized by SON in collaboration with Christian Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, was attended by parents of special children, teachers and SON coaches.
