The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has set an ultimatum of 20 days for the Nagaland State Government to set up a Committee/Commission to thoroughly review the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act, 1989.

DNSU office bearers told media persons during a press conference at its Dimapur office on April 19 that it was compelled to issue the ultimatum after the government “set aside/ignored our genuine and democratic approach” on the issue.

The union recalled that on February 29, 2020, it had served seven days ultimatum to the Commissioner of Excise, Dimapur to strictly enforce NLTP Act in the district but added that the performance of the department was far from satisfactory. Thereafter, the union involved in assisting the law enforcing agencies for months to ensure that the Act was strictly enforced, it added.

Further, they said that within a span of few months of working hand in hand with the department as observers, the union after a thorough practical analysis/research on the subject matter had submitted representation to the state government on November 21, 2020 to review the Act.

Having failed to evoke positive response from the government, the DNSU said it was compelled to issue another ultimatum of 20 days and failure on the part of the government to comply with the ultimatum would compel the union to take its own course of action.
