Dimapur, May 4 (MExN): The Dimapur Sumi Students’ Union (DSSU) has appealed to the citizens to refrain from using tobacco and its products while urging the District Administration to temporarily suspend or intercept the sale and advertisement of such products.
In a press release on Tuesday, the DSSU also urged the law enforcing agencies to keep a check on business establishments that are selling tobacco products beyond the fixed price. It stated that the packet of gutkhas which cost MRP Rs 8 and 18 are being sold at Rs 15 and 30 respectively.
Further, the DSSU pointed out that tobacco use is harmful for health as it weakens the immune system and kills an estimated 1.5 million people annually, including approximately 3,500 deaths in India every day. Taking this into consideration and in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, it urged the citizens and concerned district administration to work together towards temporary suspension/interception as per relevant sections of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003.
