The concept of waste management is still gathering pace in Nagaland. And, e-waste management is quite a new concept for the crowd.

Bendangwala Walling, Co-Founder of E-Circle, in this regard spoke about her e-waste management initiative in Nagaland today in Kohima during the International Youth Day organized by NEIMUN Foundation Nagaland under the theme Green skills for youth- Towards a sustainable world.

E-Circle, an authorised electrical and electronics collection centre in Nagaland which collects wastes from different districts sent to e-Circle’s channel partner Hulladek Recycling Private Limited, Kolkata which is authorised by Central Pollution Control Board.

It was started by Sowete-ü Letro and Bendangwala Walling in 2018.

Speaking about the venture, Walling said since its inception, it has transported around 50 tonnes of e-waste and conducted sensitization sessions. Walling added that the e-waste collection is strategically mobilized by collaborating with institutions like schools, colleges, hospitals and different government departments specifically in Dimapur, Kohima, Jalukie and Mokokchung.

An area of challenge, she pointed out was people's understanding and knowledge on e-waste management.
"In other cities, people pay the e-waste collectors for collecting their e-wastes, however in Nagaland, people tend to measure the value even when it can no longer be used anymore ranging from a broken earpiece to big electrical appliances," she elaborated.

Walling said, for e-waste, they follow 4R's cycle which are reduce, repair, reuse and recycle adding that electronics and electrical appliances after a damage, is repaired and reused but after it can no longer be repaired, it is taken or given for recycle.

So also, e-waste management till date remains a private venture finding its way to the people through small start-ups like E-Circle.

The session was moderated by Tiapong Tsudir and Keneisenuo Sorhie made special appearance. The Pangti story (2016) directed by Sesino Yhokha was screened during the event.
