Kohima, August 20 (MExN): To study the conditions of aged people first hand, the EAC and DySP Probationers of 2014 batch visited Chedema village on August 20. Altogether, 76 elderly people came for the interaction, informed a press release from Dr. Hovithal Sothu, Course Coordinator for NCS and NPS Probationers.
During the programme, Dr. Hovithal Sothu thanked the village authority and the elders for making the program possible. He shared the reason for their visit and requested the elderly people to share their joys and problems with the young officers.
Abeinuo Jasmine, NCS (P) shared on behalf of the probationers, while many elderly people from the village also spoke. The villagers also shared their concern for the growing unemployment in the village, and requested one probationer to share his/her experiences so that they can also take the message to their children. For this, Rumbemo Kithan NCS (P) shared his experiences.
After the formal gathering, the probationers prepared tea and snacks and served to all present.
The probationers further divided themselves into groups of two and went to homes of the widows and widowers who have no one to look after them. There, they chopped fire woods, stacked fire woods, cleaned homes and compounds, winnowed rice, fetched water, gave massages and listened to them, the release stated. Problems of old age pension, destitute pension and other related issues such as walking aids for the disabled and hearing aids were raised by the elderly.
The elders of the village thanked the probationers and the authority for arranging such a program, which was the first of its kind. Young officers going all out to help the elderly without any expectation touched a good number of the senior citizens, the release stated.
