'Number of trees regenerated not sufficient'
Dimapur, April 22 (MExN): Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr. Nicky Kire today said that students can play an important role in preserving nature and help combat climate change. Speaking at the ceremonial tree plantation programme on the occasion of 47th Earth Day at the forest office complex, Dimapur, Dr. Kire urged students to each plant a tree and added that the sapling should be nurtured till maturity. “Each of us needs to give back to society in whatever little way we can,” he said.
In the context of Nagaland, Dr. Kire lamented that jhum and shifting cultivation have been the biggest factors responsible for forest degradation. He said that in the past it was an efficient method of cultivation but with the increase in density of population, the number of trees regenerated is not sufficient.
Meanwhile, Additional PCCF (Development and Planning), I Panger Jamir said human actions were destroying the planet and each person must take responsibility for his or her action. Pointing out that natural resources are drying up as a result of over population, he stated, in order to save the planet for future generations, “we must act now.”
To mark the occasion, ‘Green Pledge’ was taken by all officers and staff of the Forest department as well as students from various schools who were present at the function.
Other officers who also spoke on the occasion were DFO Dimapur, K Ihevi Aomi, IFS, and Conservator of Forest (RPU), YM Jami, IFS.
