The two-day education fair organised by the Educentre Career Counseling (ECC) concluded on June 27 registering a footfall of around 600. It was held at Hotel Japfü in Kohima on June 26 and at Hotel Acacia in Dimapur the following day, June 27.
It was the sixth Edufair organised by the ECC in collaboration with various educational institutes from across India. In the latest event, 17 colleges and universities participated, opening up vistas to the various courses, scholarships and placement opportunities provided by the institutes.
One of the representatives was hopeful of his institute getting the first batch of students from Nagaland. Prof Debojit Bose, Department of Civil Engineering, representing Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar, said that the KIIT has yet to open an account from Nagaland. “We are expecting good number of students this year,” he said, while stating that it would be a good beginning.
KIIT offers 34 undergraduate, 32 postgraduate, 10 integrated, 11 PhD and seven postdoctoral research programmes in engineering, medical, management, humanities and media studies. The Kalinga Institute of Medical Science offers MBBS, MD and MS degree, while the Kalinga Institute of Dental Science BDS and MDS degrees. Prof Bose maintained that entrance exam is mandatory for all students applying to study in KIIT, while adding that it does not encourage “donation.”
Dr Rohit Sharma, Principal, Department of Tourism, CT University, said that he got to interact with a lot of students, who were curious and raising questions not only about the courses available but also about employability. CT University is based in Ludhiana, Punjab.
According to him, the university is “an industry driven university” placing emphasis on industry experts teaching the students over above the regular faculty. He said that 40 percent of the syllabus in the university is taught by industry experts, while informing that its under-graduate and post-graduate programmes have tie-ups with various professional institutions.
The courses it offers include engineering, management, pharmaceutical science, humanities and law, besides others. The fee structure ranges from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh a year. Hostel fee ranges aroud 80,000, he added.
Dr Ijaz Ahmad Bhat, a faculty member of the Department of Prosthodontics, Surendera Dental College & Research Institute, Rajaathan, said that gaining admission into the institute would first require passing the UG NEET. He said that it offers 9 PG courses after BDS. According to him, the fee structure of the institute is relatively less than that of other colleges offering the similar courses.
While stating that it was the institute’s first participation in an education fair in Nagaland, he said that it is offering a scholarship of Rs one lakh to students from the state. A four-year BDS course normally costs up to Rs 12 lakh but he said that it is offering a package of Rs 8 lakh for the same course covering accommodation and food.
There were also representatives from called Learnet Skills Limited headquartered in Delhi. Niranjan Sarma, a faculty member of Learnet Skills Guwahati branch said that the training centre is sponsored under CSR projects specializing in skilling and upskilling. Sarma said that the centre has an ongoing India-Japan programme opening up opportunity to work as care-givers in Japan. Admission into the programme, which lasts upto 8 months, requires class 12 (passed) certificate. “Those who get to work in Japan through this programme can earn atleast 1.5 lakh a year,” added his colleague Papiya Nazneen.
