DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 7 (MExN): Eight persons were arrested from various parts of Dimapur for extortion and illegal taxation over the past week. As per a press release from Dimapur police, the eight individuals were arrested in connection to 7 different cases, which were registered in various police stations.
The most recent incident involved the arrest of an NNC member, identified as Capt Tokishe Yeptho (49). The police release informed that he was arrested while issuing “work permit in the name of United Naga People Government NNC (Parent Body).”
Another NNC member of the Non-Accordist faction, identified as 2nd Lieutenant Mika Chophy (24) was arrested on September 4 “while serving a yearly tax at medical wholesale distributors located at MP Road Dimapur.”
On September 3, two persons were arrested in separate incidents while collecting money/tax. One was identified as Shikavi Chophy (35), who was said to be demanding money from egg traders at Murgipatti (Naga Bazaar) in the name of the NSCN (R). Cash amounting to Rs 32,000 was also seized from the accused by the police. In the other incident, one Lutoi K Achumi (27) was arrested at Naharbari while collecting “yearly tax” from commercial pickup trucks in the name of the NNC/GDRN. Cash amounting to Rs 7200 was confiscated from his possession.
On September 2, two persons, namely— under Secretary Khekugha Aye (31) and Hovikhu Sumi (43) were arrested at 6th Mile while issuing “information slips” to businesses in the name of the NSCN (R)’s Ministry of Chaplee Affairs. The same day, in a separate incident, a Leacy in the NSCN (K-Niki) identified as Yehoto Aye (41) was arrested from demanding money from truck drivers at Diezephe.
The previous day, on September 1, the police had arrested one Alam Shah (35) in connection to the abduction of a truck driver near the Chathe Bridge (NH 29). As per the police release, the accused demanded Rs 27,000 as “yearly tax” in the name of the NSCN (K-Niki) and NSCN (IM) to release the abducted driver. It added that the driver was rescued.
