Dimapur, February 11 (MExN): The Pochury Baptist Church Council (PBCC) has issued a statement regarding the upcoming assembly elections in Nagaland. The statement highlighted that the elections in the past have brought a bad name to the state and called for both political leaders and the electorate to take responsibility and to act with accountability.
Expressing growing concern over the persecution of minorities, particularly the Christian community, in India, the statement, issued by PBCC Executive Secretary, Rev Rümatho Nyusou lamented that the once tolerant and accommodating spirit of the country has been lost, despite the claim of "unity in diversity."
The PBCC went on to state that Nagaland, with a large Christian presence, is not immune to these issues and pointed out that the elections in the past have brought a bad name to the state. It called for both political leaders and the electorate to take responsibility and to act with accountability.
Emphasizing that the upcoming election in two weeks time, is not just a matter of exercising one's franchise, but also an exercise of faith, the PBCC stated that “Any political leader or party who seeks the mandate of the people and claims to represent their constituency should honestly present their aspiration and exasperation on the floor of the assembly once they have secured the trust of the people.”
It also called for citizens to discharge their Christian social responsibility and to make wise decisions based on their faith. “As the day of election inches closer to us each passing day, may God grant us the wisdom to discern what is right and what is wrong, and the courage to do what we know is right,” it added.
