The Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) and the Nagaland state Cabinet met on August 25 in Kohima. As per official sources, the establishment of the stalled Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA) was on the top of the agenda. The meeting took place as the state government and ENPO are deadlocked over devolution of legislative autonomy to the FNTA six months after the Government of India, Nagaland state government and ENPO signed a tripartite Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) in February 2026.
The ENPO has insisted that the FNTA be established with the requisite powers/authority as entered in the MoA, while the FNTA bill, which was introduced in the March 2026 Budget session, remains in a state of deferment.
The 9th session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly is scheduled to begin on September 1.
While there was a rumoured report of the state Cabinet, ENPO and Eastern Nagaland Legislators Union (ENLU) arriving at a consensus at the August 25 meeting, the sources said that no final decision was taken, as any Cabinet decision on the matter has to be tabled in the Assembly.
The sources added that the meeting with the Cabinet was followed by the ENLU and ENPO huddling in Kohima. The meeting went on till late into the evening.
