ENSF seeks help for Burma Nagas

DIMAPUR, JANUARY 11 (MExN): The Eastern Naga Students’ Federation appeals to the Nagaland Government to consider the Nagas living in Myanmar (also known as Burma) and ‘allot necessary funds for development.’ A note from the federation’s office stated that the ENSF’s president and his colleagues along with the Khiamniungan students’ president and village council members recently returned from Myanmar after a two weeks’ stay there.

The ENSF expresses pain at the suffering of the Nagas people in Myanmar, who are said to be living without ‘basic needs’ and facilities. The ENSF stated that the living condition of the peole there is very pathetic -  without roads, schools, educational institutions or electricity.  As such, the ENSF appeals to the ‘Nagas in Nagaland,’ to step forward with help for the Nagas in Myanmar. It also appeals to the Government of India and Myanmar to bring development in all fronts in these places where there are  ‘no sign of any development.’ The ENSF especially appeals to Nagaland Government for allocation of funds for ‘development’ of the Myanmar Nagas.

The federation’s president, P. Chillio had been to Myanmar as the chief guest to the Eastern Khiamniungan Students’ Union’s general conference held under the theme, “Serve your nation and the nation will serve you”. Speaking at the conference at Ningshet village on January 5, 2008, Chillio advocated the need to work for peace and unity among the “six tribes of Eastern Nagas”  He also encouraged all the students to study hard as the younger generation would not fit into the modern society without education.
