NU to notify exam dates only after government assurance

Dimapur, June 18 (MExN): The Controller of Examination, NU invited the All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) for a joint meeting on June 16 at NU Headquarters in Lumami.

The meeting was in response to ANCSU’s letter to the Vice Chancellor on June 10 appealing for promotion of undergraduate 6th Semester Student (backlog semester exam 2020) without conducting physical or online mode of examination.

The Union reiterated its appeal and also apprised the Examination Section members (Controller of Examination, Deputy Registrar and Assistant Registrar) of the various threats and difficulties faced by the students during the pandemic.

Controller of Examination, NU briefed the members on the Minister, MHRD webinar with the educational institutes to conduct final university and college exams after July, 2020.

After a comprehensive discussion, the representatives of NU and officials from the ANCSU mutually agreed to the certain points, according to a press release from ANCSU on June 18.

The Union stated that, since the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has not given any guideline to promote the final year students, Nagaland University alone promoting the final year students without conducting exams may nullify such degree certificate beyond the state of Nagaland.

Considering such repercussions, on receipt of UGC/MHRD’s advice/directive for conducting exam for the final year students, it was mutually agreed that the state government should ensure the safe return and stay of students to their respective institution districts.

It was also agreed that, for conducting end semester exam for the 7500 odd undergraduate final year students under NU, the institutions should properly sanitize the exam halls/rooms, follow social distancing (minimum 1 meter distance between the students in their examination seat plan), strictly follow the SOP’s, all students, teachers, and staff of the college to wear face masks, wash hands/use hand sanitizers during the examination.  Similarly, the autonomous colleges and universities are also requested to follow such remedial measures, ANCSU press statement said.

Only after the state government ensures the safe return and stay of the students within a stipulated time, the NU will notify the exam routine (minimum 20 days ahead from the date of exam commencement).

It was further agreed that the NU will conduct the exam in line with other state universities, so that no student is deprived of pursuing further course of studies outside the state.

ANCSU also highlighted the UGC guidelines given on April 29 and proposed that the promoted 2nd and 4th semester students be given a chance to improve their grades. The same was agreed to be put up to the University Authority for favorable decision.

The ANCSU also stressed proper dissemination of information regarding conduct of exams to the students and stakeholders of the affiliated colleges.

The Nagaland University has taken note of the same, the Union said in its press release.

As per the UGC guideline, the ANCSU also requested the University and colleges to establish a cell for handling student grievances related to examinations and academic activities.

Meanwhile, ANCSU appealed the final year students to continue preparing for the end semester exam while anticipating for the new/revised UGC/MHRD guidelines.

The ANCSU however express its confidence that the UGC/MHRD would thoroughly asses the prevailing situation in the country and issue guidelines in the greater interest of humanity. The Union said that it has also appraised State Chief Secretary and the department of Higher Education regarding the said matters for necessary action.
