Entire northeast identified as iodine-deficiency region

Mokokchung, June 7 (DIPR): The Mokokchung district-level inter-sectoral meeting on Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) has decided to make a concerted effort to contain iodine deficiency disorders in the district. It was also decided that the focus will be given on rural areas as people in the villages are still using common salt which is not iodised.

For this, the meeting decided to rope in educational institutions in creating awareness on IDDs. The meeting also stressed on the need for wide publicity through print and electronic media as these are the best platforms to educate the people. Doctors at the meeting disclosed that the entire northeastern region is identified as an iodine deficiency region and as such campaign on compulsory use of iodised salt has become a necessity.

The meeting was held at the Imkongmeren Memorial District Hospital today under the chairmanship of the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. S S Akaba, who said that IDD-related ailments are preventable. The meeting decided to make collective approach involving all offices in the district, particularly the department of Food & Civil Supplies, Social Welfare and Health & Family Welfare, Nagaland. At the meeting, a presentation on IDD was also shown by Dr. Temsu, MD. Medical Superintendent Dr. Narola and officers from other departments also took part in the discussions on the subject.
