Dimapur, March 23 (MExN): As part of the Earth Hour to mitigate climate change, Hotel De Oriental Dream, located opposite Supermarket, asked its guests to switch off for the hour (8.30-9.30 pm) on a voluntary basis. The guests were given certificates acknowledging this. In addition, a globe installation can be seen afloat in front of the Hotel. The silver foil, demarcating the continents, signifies the status of the world if electric overuse continues.
The irony of the hour is not lost to its management. “50 per cent of the business community of Dimapur started observing the Earth Hour 3-4 years back but the enthusiasm diminished. Every day we observe several such hours in Dimapur,” says the general manager of the Hotel. Nonetheless, the Hotel’s management and proprietor are of the view that whether the government gives electricity or not, entrepreneurs need to be conscious of the power situation worldwide. “There are many who are not able to study due to the lack of electricity, or those who die in hospitals without electricity. As a successful enterprise, we are trying to educate our people in this small way to be conscious of electricity overuse and climate change,” he says.
De Oriental Dream, a mid segment hotel, started as Hotel Eveline in the year 2000 before it acquired its present name in 2007. De Oriental Dream Society has a green initiative in place through which they do a number of other activities like once-every-week garbage disposals.
