Eri spun yarn could fetch 9.82 crore for Nagaland

Dimapur, June 26 (DIPR): A one day training on spinning of Eri Cocoon in Takli Spinning Wheel method was organized by the department of Sericulture at its office complex on Wednesday, June 24.

Addl. Director Sericulture, Wati Walling while speaking to the trainees said that in an effort to create awareness and help farmers earn revenue thought traditional method, the department of Sericulture conducted the one day training on spinning of Eri Cocoon on Takli spinning wheel method in Indian and Kachari style as well as Naga traditional style. Takli is a traditional of treats popularly used among Naga woman folk in different villages since time immemorial and is made out of bamboo with a dish like base of 30-50 gm weight and a stick of wood or bamboo of 8 inches is inserted in the wheel and the drafting of silk is done by passing the floppy cocoon into the wheel which is rotated time and again by fingers by giving twist.

At present, Nagaland enjoys the production of 188.50 MT of Eri empty cocoons. These cocoons if converted to yarn will give 151.80 (MT) of Eri spun yarn and when sold in the market would fetch Rs 9.82 crores for the state.

The Director also said that Talki spinning is one of the most viable economic ventures with assurance of high economic returns, adding that Nagaland possess most favourable climatic conditions for this agro based industry. He also informed that the Central Silk worm Board of India has also shown utmost interest in Nagaland with its favourable climatic condition for this agro based industry and has assured of taking substantial initiatives for its uplift at the earliest.

Deputy Director, Chandan Basera in his chairman’s remark said that most of the cocoon products in the state, instead of being converted to yarn is being sold to the traders of Assam , Manipur and even being transported to other states of India . This means that the actual profit of rearing silk worms with high economic returns is not being realized here in the State, he said. Therefore to make the people of the state aware and to earn through work culture, the department is organizing this training, He said adding that they aim to encourage the people of the state, particularly the women to earn in the villages in the traditional way. More than 100 trainees from Dimapur district attended the programme.
