Farmers in Tokiye share challenges, suggestions

Dimapur, April 4 (MExN): Farmers under Tokiye block in Zunheboto have suggested to increase emphasis on development of crops like large cardamom and kiwi (Alison var.) fruit in the area considering the climatic suitability and the success rate achieved.  

The suggestion was made during the Block Farmers’ Advisory Committee (BFAC) meeting conducted by Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Tokiye block on April 1 at Sub Divisional Agriculture Officer’s (SDAO) office, Aghunato.

  The meeting, which started with an opening remark by SDAO & BTT Convenor, ATMA, Pekiye Sumi, had discussions on varied topics concerning the welfare of farming community of the block. The members shared their experiences and also the various challenges faced in undertaking agricultural activities in the area, according to a press release received here.  

The farmers participated actively in the meeting and made several suggestions for enhancing and improving the agricultural and allied activities in the block.  

Tokiye block being one of the most suitable and largest producers of potato and kholar beans in the district, the farmers also suggested increasing production of the same by making available suitable planting materials and seeds, the release said. They also highlighted the urgent need for setting up cold storage facilities.  

For achieving the dual purpose of soil and moisture conservation and sustaining livelihood through fish cultivation, the farmers highlighted the need for constructing Water Harvesting Structures (WHS) and farm ponds in the fields.  

The members also suggested organising exposure and educational tour programmes for the block farmers.   Altogether, 28 farmers attended the meeting.
