Farmers urged to adopt organic farming

Phek, April 19 (MExN): To make farmers of the Phek aware about the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, a farmer’s fair cum awareness programme was organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra Phek at Mission Centre, T. Chikri, Pfutsero, Phek in collaboration with Chakhesang Women Welfare Society.  

The programme was graced by Neiphiu Rio, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha. Speaking on the occasion he emphasized on food security and food surplus in the district. He suggested organizing workshops on organic farming and certification thereof. He encouraged the farmers to adopt organic farming for good and health life. He also emphasized on the application of modern farming technologies to enhance the productivity and profitability. Importance of the soil health was also highlighted by the MP. He encouraged the farmers to take the maximum advantage of the PMFBY scheme to mitigate loss of crop due to vagaries of the nature.

  Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Director, ICAR-NRC on Mithun welcomed the guests and called upon the farmers of the area to utilize the benefits of the scheme to ensure financial security.  

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Phek Murohu Chotsu pressed on carrying out large scale awareness programme so the farmers can take the benefit of the scheme. Dr. RK Singh, Programme Coordinator KVK Phek briefly outlined the objective and contents of the scheme. Lodi, Branch Manager, Nagaland State Cooperative Bank, Pfutsero Branch spoke about the financial inclusion and how the farmers can take the advantage of the scheme.  

KVK Scientists Liza, Esther and Dr Debojyoti explained about various government schemes during farmers-scientist interaction and quenched the queries of the farmers. The programme concluded with vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Prakash R. Dutta.
