For the first time in the history of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), its Delhi unit will be led by a female member as president for the term 2019-2020.
This has come about after the election of new office bearers of the KSU Delhi unit wherein Marbiang Khongwir has been elected as the new president of the unit on October 26.
A ‘social meet’ of the Khasi people studying and working at the national capital was also held on the day of the election which was attended by KSU Central Body president, Lambokstar Marngar and finance secretary, Manly Nongpluh.
KSU Central Executive Committee member, Ruben Najiar and Supreme Court lawyer, Kynpham V Kharlyngdoh who is the first president of the KSU Delhi unit were also present.
Speaking on the day, Marngar urged the Khasi people in the national capital not to forget the reasons why they have moved to Delhi. “I urge you to uphold the honour and dignity of our community,” he said.
He also stressed the importance of the KSU Delhi unit while pointing out that there are many Khasi youth who are presently pursuing education and jobs in the national capital.
Nongpluh meanwhile sang praises of Marbiang Khongwir while informing the gathering that she is an active member of the KSU girls’ wing at Shillong.
Kharlyngdoh urged the community in Delhi to remember their roots and their identity. Stating that the KSU Delhi unit is a home away from home, Kharlyngdoh also informed the gathering about the beginning of the Delhi unit in 2014 which he attributed to the deep love of the founding members for the Khasi community and the country as a whole.
Other office bearers of the KSU Delhi unit were also elected which comprises Wallam K Nongsiej as Vice-President, J.Mathew Tangsong as General Secretary, Dr Bapynsuk Nohwir as Joint Secretary, Dr N Nongtdu as Finance Secretary, Dr A Syiemiong as Assistant Finance Secretary, Donbok Wanniang as Organising Secretary and B Umdor as Education Secretary. 30 members had also joined KSU on the day.
