“Voices from the Forgotten Village” a short fictional novel written by Inakali Assumi was released here in Dimapur at Juni Book Cafe, Duncan Basti on August 19 by special invitee, Dr K Nishena Nykha, Additional Director, Directorate of Higher Education Nagaland.
The book, published by PenThrill is divided into 12 chapters and written primarily from a first person’s perspective about the daily passage of a young person’s life in the modern contemporary world of Naga society.
According to the author, the idea to write the book first came to her in 2018, inspired by the tales of bygone days. “It is an attempt to reconnect with the past and highlights the conflict between Naga identity and living in a modern world,” Inakali said. She envisions the glorious past of her ancestors centred on the creation of melodious songs and enchanting stories for all occasions which was idyllic in one sense.
Above all, the book also seeks to personally connect with the reader by highlighting the lived experiences of each person, she said.
Dr Nykha, during his address on the book launch viewed that to be a passionate writer one must first be an avid reader.
Although not a writer himself, he mentioned how he admired the creativity and uniqueness brought forth by story writers and further praised the style of writing brought forth by Assumi in her books. “I am sure this will not be the last,” he said.
On the publisher’s note, Vishü Rita Krocha stated that this was the 76th publication and the second book of Inakali published by PenThrill Publication House. “For which I would like to think is another milestone for us,” she regarded.
She commended on the ability of Achumi to write vivid and engaging stories and asserted it (Voice from the Forgotten Village) be her best work yet.
It is to be noted that, Inakali, who has previously authored a collection of short stories, The Yellow Dress and co-authored a collection of poems, Potpourri Poesy as well. The Yellow Dress has been included in the MA English syllabus of St Joseph’s University. In 2016, she won the Best Objective Poetry Award for her poem, “She” during the Magnum Opus Music and Art Festival.
