The Government of Nagaland could be looking to create a new district out of Shamator subdivision and granting official recognition to the Tikhir tribe.

On Friday, Naga People's Front (NPF) MLA Kuzholuzo Azo Neinu took to Twitter congratulating the Yimkhiung and Tikhir tribes. “Its a proud moment for us all that the Government is to up grade Samator Sub Division to that of a full fledged District and also give recognition to Tikhir tribe as well . My heartiest congratulations to both Yimkhiung and Tikhir tribes[sic]” he tweeted.

The development comes after a series of peaceful agitations led by the Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC) demanding creation of Shamator district, following which the State Cabinet, on January 7, decided to set up a third party to negotiate with the tribal bodies, of the area, to resolve internal differences.

When contacted, Nagaland Home Commissioner Abhijit Sinha neither confirmed nor denied the contents of Nienu’s tweet. He only said, “There is good understanding regarding the issues between the two tribal councils now,” and the “final decisions regarding the same are expected shortly.”

Reminding that there are processes to be followed, Sinha added that “things are moving in a positive direction.”
