Dimapur | December 29
A fire in Dimapur today razed to ashes a cluster of thatch dwellings in the Burma Camp bazaar neighbourhood of Namgalong. While there was no report of any casualty, it was estimated that as many as hundred households, living as tenants, were rendered homeless.
The fire, the cause of which could not be ascertained, started around 1:30 pm and rapidly spread to envelope the entire neighbourhood. A few nearby houses were also partially burned. It took 7 fire trucks almost two hours to contain the flames.
While there were complaints of the Fire & Emergency Services responding late, a fireman said that the Dimapur Fire Station received information at around 2:15 pm and rushed to the scene. A few good minutes were lost after arrival while positioning the trucks owing to the traffic congestion and narrow alleyway leading to the place of the fire, the fireman said. The place of the fire is not far from the Fire Station. In addition to the 5 trucks that were pressed into service, it was informed that 2 more were requisitioned from the Chumukedima Fire Station. Members of the colony council said at the site that it would take sometime to assess the actual number of people affected and the loss incurred. Preparations were on to set up a relief camp for the affected from freewill donations and with assistance of the Dimapur district administration.
