First-ever liver transplantation in North East

Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad and Downtown Hospital, Guwahati' jointly perform the operation
Guwahati, October 23 (MExN): A team of doctors from Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad and Downtown Hospital, Guwahati has created history by successfully performing the ‘first-ever Liver Transplantation in North Eastern India’ in Guwahati last month.
A press release informed that the Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal while felicitating the 1st liver recipient Joydev Das, lauded the team of doctors and said that it was a “remarkable milestone and landmark achievement in the Healthcare sector in the region, and “very proud moment for the state of Assam.’
Das, (56 yrs), a resident of Goalpara district of Lower Assam, have been suffering from Chronic Liver Disease (CLD) from the past two years and his wife Ranju (44 yrs), donated part of her liver, it said.
She underwent all clinical evaluation and clearance under the supervision& guidelines of Yashoda Liver Tranplant Team, it added.
The team from Yashoda Hospitals was led by Dr P. Balachandran Menon, Yashoda Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon while Liver Transplant surgeon, Dr Pranjal Deka led the team from Downtown hospitals, the release said.
On September 14, the transplant commence at Downtown Hospital at 9 AM and it was completed at 7 PM after10 Hours, it added.
While Das was discharged on October 3, his wife was released on September 21.
According to the release, over 15,000 people die of Liver diseases every year in NE and about 2000 people need liver transplantation every year.
Very few of these people get liver transplant that too by traveling long distances to unknown places and so far over 50 patients from the region has undergone Liver Transplant successfully at Yashoda Hospital, Hyderabad, it said.
‘In order to help the local patients, Yashoda Hospitals & Downtown Hospital tied- up to provide the most “advanced liver transplant surgeries in North Eastern States by setting-up a World-class ‘Liver Transplant Centre’ at Guwahati," it added.
It is a Centre of excellence for liver transplants dedicated to the people of North eastern states" said Dr. G. S. Rao, Managing Director Yashoda Group of Hospitals was quoted as saying as the in the release.
Mayurakshi Dutta, Executive Director of Downtown Hospital further noted that the hospital is pleased to tie-up with Yashoda Hospitals to Living Donor Transplant(LDLT) in Guwahati itself for all local Assam patients and very needful for North East.
