Tura, July 18 (NNN): Floods in Garo Hills in Meghalaya claimed two lives after an elderly woman and an infant fell into the waters and drowned in separate incidents early Thursday morning in the border town of Mahendraganj in South West Garo Hills (SWGH).
Garo Hills has seen an unprecedented deluge that has left swathes of land under water in the two districts of West Garo Hills (WGH) and SWGH. More than 1.55 lakh people have been affected with many still in relief camps. Water in the flood affected areas is said to receding though at a very slow rate.
Deputy Commissioner of SWGH, Ram Kumar S confirmed the two incidents stating that the two victims lost their lives due to falling into floods waters. The two incidents happened in separate locations. While the elderly woman was drowned at Fakirpara, the infant lost his life in Daspara, both in the town of Mahendraganj.
