‘Flower Show 2020’ was declared open by Metsubo Jamir, Minister of Rural Development, Government of Nagaland at an inaugural programme today, here at Dimapur Club.

The ongoing three-day event has been organized by Dimapur District Floricultural Association (DDFA).

Addressing the gathering with a fair amount of male amongst women, Jamir said that floriculture in Nagaland itself is a big market “if you can tap into the market.”

One viable approach he suggested was initiating Nagaland State Floricultural Association.

“Our state of Nagaland is such that you can grow everything and everything can be grown. Not only flowers,” he said, encouraging the growers that one can do both horticulture and floriculture side by side and concentrate on income.

Further referring the young students as the ‘young flowers of our state,’ Jamir urged them to be involved in such activity, while adding, “Today the organizers have invited you, tomorrow, this will be your programme.”

Recognizing the importance of flowers in any given occasion, the Minister also said that “showing of something very beautiful is the most beautiful thing that a human being can do.”

While the crowd may not be much, he showed optimism that there are “sufficient flowers to show that there are enough growers.”

Jamir also urged upon the growers to maintain nurseries, which will help in continuity of the flowers, observing that there were many flower growers but not enough nurseries.

The Minister further suggested DDFFA of adding ‘nurseries’ in their nomenclature.

Meanwhile, Jamir also called upon the men in the state to take up floriculture. Stating that this was not a gender-based activity, he added that “flowers are meant for everybody.”

Lauding the efforts of the DDFA, Jamir hoped that in the next edition, the number of registered members will double.
Exhibition of ten categories of flowers; on-the-spot arrangement and the best stall were judged at the inaugural programme.
The second edition held under the theme, ‘To Earth with Love’ will culminate on March 14.
