Former DGP J. Changkija honored with 24-gun salute

To be laid to rest today at Changki

DIMAPUR, JUNE 2 (MExN): Twenty four shots fired through twelve guns pierced the silence today as Nagaland police personnel honored late Jangtsulong Changkija, former Director General of Police, Nagaland, who passed away on June 1 in Guwahati due to cardiac arrest. Changkija had occupied the top police post in Nagaland for more than five years. 

The funeral service was held at 1 pm today at the Changkija family residence in Chumukedima. Amongla Changkija, wife of the deceased expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support they have received. Putting up a brave face, she described herself as “lucky” in being able to spend her life with late Jangtsulong. Temsunochet Changkija paid his respects to his father and also recalled the fond memories he had with him. Lamenting on how life is short, he reminded the gathering that life should be lived to the fullest.

Professor Temsula Ao expressed sadness at his brother’s demise and expressed gratitude to providence for uplifting their family from their humble beginnings. Late Jangtsulong’s friends also addressed the service and paid their respects to him. Changkija, who many described as “a man of few words,” was also stated to have been a “man of action,” kind and compassionate.  

Through the course of the service, various organizations and individuals paid touching tributes to the deceased. Representatives from the Chumukedima Ao Union, Dimapur Changkiri Clan, Department of Police, IPS Association Nagaland, Chumukedima Changki Union, Dimapur Pensioners Ao Unit, Nagaland Police Baptist Church Association, Nagaland Police Service Association etc expressed their sadness at the passing away of the former DGP and offered their condolences to the family. Various legislators and representatives from the Nagaland government also attended the service.     

Rev. I Zulu, Pastor for the Chumukedima Ao Baptist Church ministered the service and read out passages from the bible. 

Flower wreaths were presented by family members, various individuals and organizations. Rev. I Zulu read out condolence messages by the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Nephiu Rio; Home Minister Kaito, the Home Commissioner; former Nagaland CM and present Governor to Odisha, SC Jamir and the Nagaland Bamboo Development Association. This was followed by a mass prayer by the gathering for the deceased and the bereaved family.

The gun salute by the Nagaland police marked the end of the funeral. A convoy of about 45 vehicles accompanying the body left for the former DGP’s village in Changki, where he will be laid to rest. Family sources informed that Jangtsulong Changkija’s funeral at Changki will be at 2pm on June 3. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, four sons and seven grandchildren.
