Former minister Nyeiwang Konyak’s demise mourned

Dimapur, February 1 (MExN): Several individuals and organisations today mourned the demise of former Minister, Nyeiwang Konyak at a private hospital in Dimapur late last night. He is survived by his wife, 3 sons and 1 daughter.   Nyeiwang was elected as Member of Nagaland Legislative Assembly from 47 Aboi Assembly Constituency for four terms from 1974 till 2008, informed a condolence message from NLA Speaker Dr. Imtiwapang Aier. He served as Minister for Power and Excise; later appointed Cabinet Minister in 1974; Minister for Health & Family Welfare from January 25, 1989 to May 14, 1990; Minister for Animal Husbandry & Veterinary from 2003 to 2004; Chairman, Nagaland State Agricultural Marketing Board in 2004; Parliamentary Secretary for Horticulture in 2005; and Minister for School Education in 2008.

  “Late Nyeiwang Konyak was a dynamic public leader who dedicated his life for the welfare of the Naga people. In his death, the State has lost a committed leader which will be felt greatly by the Naga people in general and the Konyak tribe in particular,” the NLA Speaker stated.  

On behalf of the NLA, he conveyed condolences to the wife and children and prayed that God grant them solace to withstand the loss.  

Governor: In a condolence message addressed to Ngulanie-u Nyeiwang, the Governor of Nagaland PB Acharya stated that Late Nyeiwang Konyak had served the people of Nagaland in different capacities and dedicated his life towards the welfare of the Naga society. “His demise has left a great void which will be hard to fill. The State has lost a politician who was always concerned about the welfare of the people,” Acharya said. The Governor conveyed condolences to all members of the bereaved family and prayed to the Almighty to grant them strength and solace.  

Chief Minister: Chief Minister TR Zeliang also expressed shock over the death. He described the deceased as a “sincere, dedicated and a down to earth person and a born leader.” In a condolence message, the CM stated Nyeiwang continued to be actively involved in the service of the people till his last breath even after his defeat in the 2013 general election. “Late Nyeiwang Konyak was a well-respected person, and will be long remembered by all who knew him,” he added. The CM on behalf of the Government of Nagaland conveyed condolences to the bereaved family and prayed to God to give them great courage and fortitude.

KG Kenye: Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), KG Kenye prayed for the eternal repose of former Minister and friend Nyeiwang Konyak. “I offer my deepest condolences and pray that our good Lord consoles the entire family for the great loss.”  

Kholi: Vice president of NSCN (IM), Gen (retd) Kholi stated he was pained and saddened by the demise of Nyeiwang Konyak. “His death is a great loss to the Konyak community in general and Aboi area in particular which will not be easy to forget,” he said, remembering the former minister as “a dedicated leader who stood for the uplift of his people and…also a staunch supporter of the Naga national cause.” His contribution shall always be cherished, Kholi added. He further extended condolence to the bereaved family and prayed to God to comfort them.  

ENWO: The Eastern Nagaland Women organization (ENWO) also expressed sadness over the demise of the former minister. “Late Nyeiwang konyak led an exemplary life as a leader and was and will always be a great inspiration to the people of Eastern Nagaland,” it said. “Although words cannot express the irreplaceable loss we feel at this hour, we would like to extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family as they go through this profound period of loss and grief.” ENWO prayed that God will provide solace to the bereaved soul and give courage and strength to the family he has left behind.  

EPAN: Expressing shock over the demise, the Ex-Parliamentarian Association of Nagaland (EPAN) remembered Nyeiwang as a sincere public leader who served the people with full devotion and dedication. “In this hour of gloom and grief, I on my own behalf and on behalf of the Ex-Parliamentarian of Nagaland convey our heartfelt condolences,” stated T. Khongo, EPAN president in a message.  

JD (U): The president, his colleagues and members of the JD (U) Nagaland mourned along with the families, Konyak tribe and the people of Nagaland on the demise of Nyeiwang Konyak. “Late Nyeiwang Konyak was a prominent leader of the Konyak Tribe and a veteran political leader of Nagaland. He has been immensely contributing his service to the people and the Nagas in general,” acknowledged a message from JD (U) Nagaland Media Cell secretary. Stating that his demise has caused immeasurable loss to the people of Nagaland, the JD (U) Nagaland paid homage to the departed soul and expressed condolence to the families grieving the loss.  

NDPP: Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) recalled Nyeiwang as “a simple and refined politician who also gave his best services towards encouraging the education of the younger generation.” The NDPP president, Chingwang Konyak and all rank and file of the NDPP Central Executive Board extended sincere condolences to the wife and children of the deceased and prayed that God give them strength and solace to overcome the loss.
