Former Nagaland Director-General of Police Jangtsülong Changkija (IPS) passed away this morning in Guwahati.

Dimapur, June 1 (MExN): Former Nagaland Director-General of Police Jangtsülong Changkija (IPS) passed away this morning at International Hospital, Guwahati. Family members said that Changkija, who suffered from a prolonged illness, had multiple organ failure which resulted in a fatal cardiac arrest. He was pronounced dead at around 11:15 am on June 1 and his body was brought back to Dimapur late this evening. The funeral service will be held on June 2, 2013 at his private residence in Old British Railway colony, Chumukedima at 1:00 pm. Thereafter, his mortal remains will be taken to his native village, Changki which will be his final resting place.
Jangtsülong Changkija was the fourth child of Imnamathongba and Nokintemla Changkija of Changki village, Mokokchung district. He was born on March 1, 1949 at Jorhat, Assam and began primary schooling at the Mission LP School, Jorhat, and later shifted to Changki LP School. He passed Matric from the Mangkolemba Government High School in 1965 and joined PU (Arts) in Cotton College, Guwahati. He graduated from the same college with Honours in Political Science in 1969 and spent his entire college life at the DS Hostel of Cotton College.
Changkija was a keen sportsman in both outdoor and indoor sports; his favourites being Volleyball and football, etc. He played in the famous Gauhati Town Cup in all the major Volleyball tournaments.
In the indoor games, he excelled in Carom. He was a versatile sportsman and excelled in other sports disciplines too. Changkija joined the NCC (Air Wing) during his college days. Changkija’s college mates remember him as a man of few words but full of good qualities and always ready to help others particularly his friends.
Changkija joined the Department of School Education as a UDA (Text Book Productions) while waiting for his BA (Honours) final results, as well as for the results of the Nagaland Public Service Commission (Nagaland Civil Service/Nagaland Police Service/Nagaland Civil Secretariat Allied Service). He was selected by the NPSC for the Nagaland Police Service and joined the Police Service in 1970. He belonged to the Nagaland 1975 (IC) Cadre.
Changkija was married to Setsüngmongla on December 22, 1972. He served as SDPO, Mokokchung, SDPO, Kohima, Deputy Commandant, 5th NAP, at Phek, SP, Tuensang, Commandant, 1st NAP, Chumukedima, Commandant, 5th NAP, SP, Kohima, SSP, Kohima, DIG of several wings at the PHQ, IGP of several wings at the PHQ, ADGP and finally retired as DGP, Nagaland on February 28, 2009.
Besides numerous Police awards, Changkija received the Special Duty Medal with Bar, Police Medal for Meritorious Service and President’s Medal for Distinguished Service. He served as DGP of Nagaland for more than 6 years. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and four sons and seven grandchildren.
