Guwahati, December 28 (MExN): With the additions of two stations in November, 370 feasible stations (except halt stations) of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) have been provided with free Wi-Fi hotspots, an official release said today.
The majority of district and sub-division headquarters that have railway stations within NFR jurisdiction have now been provided with free Wi-Fi network apart from other important stations, the release from NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Subhanan Chanda informed.
NFR covers total 10 states (8 North-eastern states and parts of 2 Eastern India states.
Of the 370 stations where free Wi-Fi have been provided, 213 are in Assam, 94 are in West Bengal, 35 are in Bihar, 20 are in Tripura, 3 are in Arunachal Pradesh, 2 in Nagaland and 1 each in Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram, it added.
The Indian Railways is providing fast and free Wi-Fi to passengers as part of the Government of India’s big push towards digital India initiative, the release said.
Initially, high speed Wi-Fi services at some Railway stations were provided through collaboration of RailTel and Google in first phase where RailTel provided high speed end to end network connectivity on Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) & Google provided Radio access network equipment along with technology support.
Later on free Wi-Fi at stations are provided under Corporate Social Responsibility by M/s Tata Trust.
