Kohima | May 26 : In keeping with the enforcement of NDPS Act’85 in the state, 7778 kgs of contraband ganja seized by the state’s excise department on different occasion was destroyed by burning at the KMC dumping site this morning.
Source stated that the street value of the said 7778 kgs of contraband ganja was amounting to Rs. 1.94.45 crore (One crore ninety four lakh and forty five thousand). The destruction of the seized contraband ganja was carried out by Departmental Destruction Committee (DDC) instituted by the government for the purpose as per provision under NDPS Act’85 since, “there is no further utility of the seized ganja.” The said contraband ganja was destroyed in the presence of DDC headed by Nribemo Lotha, DC Excise (Narcotics) as chairman with members P. Tako Jamir, ACE (Administration), M. Tali Longchar, ACE (Enforcement) and Visedelie Mepfhuo, SE Kohima and witnessed by representatives of District & Session Judge, Kohima, representative of Deputy Commissioner Kohima, representative of Kohima Municipal Council and Naga Mother’s Association.
Later, talking to media persons, Naga Mother’s Association (NMA) president Abei-ü Meru while appreciating the commendable job of officers/staff of excise department towards enforcement of Prohibition Act, has also called for raising more manpower in the excise department. She also stated that the government must amend Prohibition Act to ensure its effective implementation in the state.
