Maligaon, November 27 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) today informed that rapid progress in the construction of six new Gati Shakti cargo terminals in Assam, with the terminal at Baihata in Kamrup Rural set to become the first to be commissioned.
Being developed by BR Transcon Ltd at an estimated cost of Rs 245 crore, the Baihata Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal has completed physical construction and is currently undergoing statutory clearances, it added.
In a press release, the NFR stated that the facility is expected to be operational “very soon” adding that it will significantly enhance freight movement and reduce logistics costs for industries across the Northeast.
Once commissioned, the terminal is expected to handle more than 25 freight rakes per month, it added.
Key features include three new goods lines, an electronic in-motion weighbridge, two goods platforms with a circulating area, high-mast lighting for round-the-clock operations, and a dedicated ramp for automobile handling.
The Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal policy, introduced in 2022, aims to promote modern logistics infrastructure with industry participation.
Assam already has two operational terminals—at Moinarband near Silchar and Cinnamara near Jorhat. In February 2025, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced six additional terminals for the state.
According to NFR, the upcoming terminals include facilities at Habaipur in Lanka (Lumding Division), Jogighopa, Baihata, Kendukona (Multi-Modal Logistics Terminal), Basugaon (HPCL Terminal), and Chayagaon (Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal), all under Rangiya Division.
