Kohima, July 27 (MExN): A one day Gender Advocacy and Sensitization Training/Workshop will be conducted by Indigenous Women Resource Centre (IWRC) for Dobashis of Kohima on July 28 at Nagaland University Conference Hall.
“All Dobashis under Kohima have confirmed their participation for the training cum workshop,” said IWRC Director Rosemary Dvuvichu adding that the training is to sensitize decision makers of customary courts/Dobashi courts on various gender issues in Nagaland, crimes and violence against women and customary laws and practices vis-a-vis empowerment of Naga women.
The advocacy workshop is being conducted by the IWRC under a programme of the UNIFEM, with full cooperation from the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima.
Earlier, in April, the IWRC had organized a seminar in collaboration with NUTA Kohima on “Customary laws and violence against women” and brought well known Supreme Court lawyer and activist Indira Jaisingh as the resource person.
The IWRC was launched in June 2000 with its headquarters at Shillong and funding from IFAD by a team of committed indigenous women activists of the North east, with Jarjum Ete, chairperson, Arunachal State Women Commission as President, Rosemary Dzuvichu as Secretary and Padmashree Patricia Mukhim as the first Director as well as representative of indigenous women from different states of the North East region as executive members.
The centre has carried out its mandate of training and capacity building of indigenous women in the areas of gender mainstreaming.
It specializes in gender advocacy and gender sensitization training for government agencies, women and civil societies and carries out research studies on various issues on indigenous women in the north east as well as enhancing women’s role in the political process.
The center is being looked after by national and international organisations as a resource centre for information on status of women in North East India and their struggles for a more gender-just society.
The IWRC has shifted to Kohima since January 2006 with a change in Directorship and continues with its mandate of gender sensitization training, studies and advocacy for empowering indigenous women of the north east. The other two centres of IWRC, initiated by IFAD are in Orissa and Southern China.
