Akangtola Ao, a lecturer at St. John’s College speaks during a WED themed programme held at government high school, Sarbura, Kashiram on June 3.
DIMAPUR, JUNE 3 (MExN): As the world gears up to observe World Environment Day (WED) 2011 on June 5, a small school in a remote corner of Dimapur has gone a step ahead of the rest. Government High School, Sarbura, Kashiram on Friday, June 3 organised a small yet significant programme at its campus. So what it came two days ahead? Afterall, caring for the environment is not only about leaving aside a specific day of the year.
The school also conducted a tree plantation and cleanliness drive on June 2 in keeping with this year’s WED theme: Forests – Nature at your Service. It was spearheaded by the school’s ‘Eco Club’.
Akangtola Ao, a lecturer at St. John’s College was the resource person at today’s programme. Addressing the students Ao said environment is one particular topic which is really close to her. “We’re living because of it.” Touching on this year’s theme, she said that it is not only the trees and the animals that make up forests. The presence of all organisms, starting from, the smallest insects, plants, animals and micro-organisms make up the forests. All these however, cannot survive without soil, water and sunlight. The combined activities of these factors provide life supporting oxygen, she said. Drawing parallel with a home, she said that just like humans the organisms need forests to survive which in turn are supported by soil, water and sunlight. Hence, everybody should contribute towards the well being of the environment. She further expressed delight that the school is also doing its part by having an ‘eco club’.
India is this year’s WED host with major events planned in New Delhi and Bangalore. The holding of the world 10K Race in Bangalore on June 5 will see some 25, 000 people running in support of WED. Organizers and participants will also inaugurate ‘World 10K Forest’, to which more trees will be added at future races.
