Dimapur, June 5 (MExN): From Bangalore to Bangkok, joining with more than hundred countries of the world particularly India, who, for the first time, was selected as the global host of World Environment Day 2011 (WED) Peren, the green district of Nagaland also observed a grand WED on Saturday, June , a day ahead of the worldwide observance. L. Jamithung Lotha SDO (civil) Jalukie was the chief guest. He reminded the participants about the recent change in climate which are noticeable within a short span of time like the drying up of rivers and streams and the requirement for fans even in hill stations today and called upon communities for collective action towards climate change mitigation. He cautioned the local people against felling of trees and encouraged the participants to plant more trees and conserve the dense forests in their neighborhood which will ultimately help the State to maintain 70% forest cover. He also proposed for a transition to eco-friendly way of living by adapting to energy saving home appliances and waste recycling. Rampaukai, the Range Forest Officer Jalukie deliberated on the true objective of observing World Environment Day; which is to enhance political attention and public action towards establishing a healthy and sustainable environment. He underscored on the “Greening Jalukie” initiative by Forest department with tree planting activities, which is intended to help facilitate for proper town planning processes in the future. He led the participants in taking a pledge to create environmental awareness, conserve forest resources, plant more trees and become active agents of change. The programme was culminated by organizing mass planting act in Government School area and on all roadsides of Jalukie Town, covering some 6800 meter distance and planting 4235 nos. of seedlings.
The Kiphire District Private Schools Association on June 5 celebrated world environment day at Cambridge School Kiphire in the form of painting and essay writing. In both essay and painting there were senior and junior categories. Tsaliba of El Beth School stood first in senior essay and Yanglim of Cambridge School stood second and in junior category Nunhoi of Cambridge stood first and Chumrila of El Beth School stood second. In painting category senior Evitsu of Cambridge stood first and Ato of Saramati stood second and in junior category Limtsaba of Cambridge stood first and Lenso of Good Shepherd School stood second.
Also the Students Union of SASRD, Medziphema carried out a plantation drive within the campus premises where more than 100 saplings were planted. Chief Guest was Prof.Alemla Ao (Dept. of Entomology) who cited the importance of forests and the Duties and obligations of the students especially in the profession of Agriculture. She focused on the diversity of north east and its rich resources and that it is the duty of each and everyone to take care of it and continue to safeguard the environment.
