Chümoukedima, March 2 (MExN): The 50th Annual Sports Week of Patkai Christian College (Autonomous) commenced on Monday at the college ground, marking the golden jubilee of one of the institution’s longest-running traditions.
Founder and Principal Emeritus Rev Dr Tuisem A Shishak symbolically inaugurated the event by kicking off the ball, setting the tone for a week-long celebration of athletic spirit and camaraderie.
Held under the theme “Confluence: Art & Athletics,” the milestone edition celebrates five decades of sporting excellence while honouring the legacy and sense of community that have evolved around the annual event. Students, faculty members and alumni gathered for the opening ceremony, marking the beginning of a series of competitions showcasing talent, teamwork and sportsmanship.
Addressing the gathering as the guest of honour, Rev Dr Shishak emphasised the importance of nurturing the spirit, mind and body for holistic development. The nonagenarian highlighted the close link between physical health and intellectual and spiritual growth, urging students to strive for balance and excellence in all aspects of life.
He also underscored the theme of cultural integration, encouraging the preservation of traditional games, music and cultural practices alongside modern sporting activities. Calling on students to pursue academic excellence, deepen their faith and actively participate in sports, he stressed the role of physical activity in overall well-being.
A ceremonial lighting of the torch, oath-taking and a colourful march past were among the highlights of the opening ceremony. The golden jubilee Sports Week, organisers said, stands as a testament to the college’s sustained commitment to promoting physical fitness, healthy competition and a vibrant campus life over the years.
