Government mulls two-tier power plan

Minister for Power Doshehe Y. Sema today said the state is mostly dependent on power allocation from central-sector generating stations operating in the North Eastern Region. “Therefore the availability of power has always been critical as the allocation is less than the demand. He was replying this to Congress MLA Joshua Sumi in the floor of the House on being asked the main cause of constant power failure in Nagaland today and what kind of step is being taken by the department to address the problem.

The state government is seeking additional allocation from mega thermal projects from Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) through GoI, he said. This is a ‘short term step’. The ‘long term plan, he said is setting up own major generation plants both for hydro and thermal utilities. Under this, Doshehe said the Nagaland government has initiated development of Tizu and Dikhu Mega Hydro projects. The state government has also taken up for allocation of coal blocks from the GoI for setting up thermal plants under joint venture.

The power minister also replied that a total amount of Rs. 23368.76 Lakh has already been sanctioned by Power Ministry Delhi under RGGVY Programme to Nagaland.  The break according to district is Dimapur at Rs.3475. 69 Lakh, Peren at Rs. 1649.25 Lakh, Tuensang at Rs. 2458.78 Lakh, Kiphire at 1984.14 Lakh, Mokokchung at Rs. 1531.33 Lakh, Wokha at Rs. 2761.32 Lakh, Kohima at 2052.06 Lakh, Mon at 2852.63 Lakh, Longleng at Rs. 775.22 Lakh, Phek at Rs. 1333.81 Lakh and Zunheboto at Rs. 2494.53 lakhs. On being queried on the nature of work undertaken in the districts, the minister said it was in the form of the construction of sub-transmission lines, distribution lines and associated sub-stations. It also includes providing free electricity connection to BPL households.
