Neglect and apathy is what comes to mind seeing the road conditions here. While the government make paper claims refuting allegations, the roads continue to deteriorate by the day as the public make do with voluntary temporary repairs. In yet another case of the public taking the initiative, the Notun Basti Council (NBC) undertook a road repair exercise on August 26 filling potholes on August 26.
It was the second such initiative undertaken in the locality within a space of a month. To affect the repairs, a general social work was organised during the day with the residents of the locality and the NBC pitching in with monetary donations. The machinery was provided by the Dimapur Municipal Council.
The roads in the locality was last blacktopped some 30 years ago with the NBC stating that it has become a normal practice for the council and the residents to level roads. The council also lamented the neglect and apathy on the part of the department as well as the MLA representing the Assembly Constituency under which the colony falls.
The NBC further pointed out the deplorable condition of the road that connects Khermahal with Tajen Road (formerly Circular Road) via Neisatuo colony, Nyamo colony, IV/LRC colony and Notun Basti. In a letter written to the DC in July 2016, the NBC highlighted an incomplete repair project sanctioned for the aforesaid stretch of road, a section of which passes through Notun Basti.
Quoting RTI replies acquired by the ACAUT which was published in the media, the NBC in the letter said that an amount of Rs. 37.73 lakh was sanctioned by the PWD (Roads & Bridges), Dimapur Division for the aforesaid road segment in December 2015. The NBC said that the work was abandoned midway. “But the work was done only within Khermohal police point to Neisatuo Colony and the road from Neisatuo Colony to Notun Bosti Circular road (junction) are still neglected,” the NBC letter said. The said half done road repair project remains neglected and forgotten by the authority concerned till date.
