Kohima, January 25 (MExN): Nagaland Governor, K. Sankaranarayanan has assured that with elections in the State scheduled for March 5, the government has made elaborate arrangements for free and fair elections to ensure that people can elect their representatives to form a government based on the fundamental principles of “public welfare and public good.” Assuring the people that elections would be conducted in the most impartial and peaceful manner, the governor encouraged all citizens to exercise their constitutional right of franchise and elect their representatives. He said that such a democratically elected Government is the need of the hour, which can address the aspirations of the people and lead the State on a path of growth and development.
Speaking on the eve of the 58th anniversary of the country’s Republic, Sankaranarayanan extended greetings to all the citizens to the state and used the occasion to acknowledge the architects of the constitution, who he said, had the foresight to create a constitution that ensured unity and integrity of the nation in spite of its unique diversities for the last six decades. The governor added that this constitution also gives an opportunity to preserve the unique and distinct cultural heritage of the people of Nagaland while guaranteeing the fundamental principles of equality, liberty and justice for all.
Sankaranarayanan continued that today, the people are sitting on the cross roads of development and peace. “Peace is no more just desired, people know that peace is their right and they must have it”, he emphasized and added that government machineries must strive hard to ensure that no one can disrupt peace and create any law and order problems in the State. He said that such an environment that can nurture development requires accountability and good governance from the public servants. ‘We have progressed a lot in the last few decades,’ said the governor but is positive that ‘we can do much more.’
Talking of the fast growing global economy, Sankaranarayanan said that Indian economy is regarded to be amongst the fastest growing economies. He was of the view that ‘we need to benefit from this era of economic boom and ensure that Nagaland also marches ahead in physical infrastructure that is roads, electricity and water supply as well as social infrastructure with progress in education and health.’ The governor also defined the need for the economy to harness traditional advantages in the field of agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry and handicrafts along with benefiting from the developments in sectors like Information Technology, tourism, and hospitality sectors. “Such an approach will create wealth for our entrepreneurs and jobs for the youth. Our economic potential is immense and I am sure we have a bright tomorrow”, he said adding his wishes and prayer for God “to bless our people and our state to ensure an era of peace and development in the days to come.”
